KILMER

BRASSERIE & STEAKHOUSE

Dr. Kilmer & Co, an enterprise founded in the 1870s was one of the first firm to advertise nationally, and many of its 18 herbal remedies, including the popular "Swamp Root and Kidney Cure," could be found in homes across the country. Due to their questionable ingredients, high alcohol content - 10% and extravagant therapeutic claims, proprietary medicines such as Dr. Kilmer's became targeted by the National Food and Drug Act of 1906 but remained widely successful particularly during the Prohibition.

These “medicines” brought great fortune to Jonas Kilmer and he set to build a magnificent building in 1903 as his office and manufacturing facility for the Swamp Root cure. The building was finished in 1906.  It is now a landmark listed on the State and National Register of Historic Places; it features an extravagant and imposing marble foyer, grand lobby, mosaic floors and mahogany executive offices now part of the Kilmer Brasserie & Steakhouse restaurant.
